Artificial Intelligence, FOIA Software Solution

The Relationship Between E-Discovery and FOIA

FOIA-E-Discovery-Integration

When we talk about e-discovery software integration, we mean on electronically sharing information which can be requested by FOIA.

From the moment of requesting submission to delivery, FOIA is very similar to e-discovery.

They both need to:

  • Review and identify records to prevent disclosing exempted information to the public,
  • Centralize and standardize an enormous amount of electronic documents,
  • Give information under a given deadline, and
  • Locate information linked to specific issues

After receiving FOIA request to a federal agency, it handled by that body’s FOIA coordinator. He has 20 business days to respond on that request. Seeing the large volumes of ESI federal agencies, responding on time is a significant challenge.

To Sum Up

E-discovery is often used to control costs and increase efficiency when making ESI productions in government investigations or litigation. This operational similarity can be used for improving productivity and efficiency among federal agencies that deal with FOIA. You are asking HOW? By integrating e-discovery as part of agencies’ FOIA Software Solution.

TRANSCRIPTION LANDSCAPE: DO HUMANS EVEN WANT DOMINANCE IN AI-POWERED TRANSCRIPTION SOFTWARE?

This is an expert from this blog post TRANSCRIPTION LANDSCAPE: DO HUMANS EVEN WANT DOMINANCE IN AI-POWERED TRANSCRIPTION SOFTWARE?

AI-Transcription-Services

The world is full of data. And 90% of the world’s total data was created in the last 2 years.

Let this sink in for a moment: In the past 2 years, we’ve created more data than our human civilization produced since we started writing.

A lot of this data is multimedia files. Whether it is a simple customer call, recording of a meeting, judicial hearing, etc. organizations generate enormous amounts of multimedia files.

Of course, large organizations need to somehow extract value from this stored multimedia content.

THE CHALLENGE OF HUMAN-POWERED MULTIMEDIA TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES

Although it seems more logical for humans to respond to the task of transcribing multimedia files, people can’t adequately respond to the needed level of accuracy and volume. Plus, there’s the security and privacy to think about.

I tend to look at this problem from a construction perspective. Imagine we’re tasked to dig a 1000 miles long ditch, in a perfect, straight line. Will we do it better, faster, easier by getting 1000 people, or go for a mechanized approach? I’m pretty sure that anyone who’s come within 30 feet of a shovel will gladly call on the excavators.

Organizations that regularly do manual transcription of recordings say that it takes up to 9 hours of transcription work to transcribe a single hour of recorded interview. A 9:1 ratio is very hard to use at a scale.

This means that a court hearing of 4 hours will mean one worker’s full workweek to transcribe. Multiply this by many more hours, more hearings, in more courtrooms, every single day, and we soon get to see the problem of human-powered transcription. Human-powered transcription is not scalable.

AI-powered transcription software, on the other hand, has become much easier to use, much faster and much more accurate than traditional transcription platforms. With any of the available software solutions for automated transcription, a single employee can cover a lot of ground, without the grind.

And, one increasingly relevant consideration that makes a huge difference is privacy and security. Automated transcription software where fewer people touch the data are inherently more secure.

THE STATE OF PUBLIC DEFENDERS WORKLOAD: CAN AI FIX THE PEOPLE GAP?

This is an excerpt from THE STATE OF PUBLIC DEFENDERS WORKLOAD: CAN AI FIX THE PEOPLE GAP?

Public-Defenders-AI-Powered-Solutions

50 years after the historic Gideon vs. Wainwright, many legal advocates believe that the justice system is still failing the poor. Many think that it’s a class issue, that the poor don’t deserve the same legal protection. But I think there’s a different perspective to the problem, and I think I have a solution for it.

As the Innocence Project reports, Public Defenders’ caseloads in some US states include about 80 to 100 cases per week.

Per Week.

That’s about 400 cases per month or more than 4500 cases per year.

That’s an impossible schedule to fulfill, no matter how dedicated legal workers are.

THE OVERWORKED PUBLIC DEFENDERS FAIL THE POOR

The good part about the US Justice System is that every citizen in America has the right to be represented by a Public Defender if they can’t afford a lawyer.

The unfortunate part is that the number of these citizens is huge. In fact, more than 80% of those charged with felonies can’t afford an attorney. As a result, hundreds, even thousands of people end up in jail, and many times because their defense was not as effective.

And how could it?

According to the Innocence Project statistics mentioned above, an average Public Defender that works 40 hours per week has only 20-30 minutes to devote to each case.

So, how could one Public Defender handle all these cases in a week, every week, for years… and do it right?

To any justice-loving person, this is alarming. We can’t have innocent people ending up in jail. Not in the US. Not in the 21st century.

We need a paradigm shift.
We don’t need more Public Defenders.
We need Artificial Intelligence (AI).
